Media Portrayal of Young People
‘Unhappy, Unloved and Out of Control’
(Time Magazine 26/04/08)
‘‘Another day, another kid murdered by kids…’
(The Sun 27/5/08)
Fed up with seeing negative headlines like the ones
above and reading about ‘feral’ youths, a group of Young NCB
members decided to find out how young people actually feel about
the way they are being portrayed by the British media.
Supported by NCB’s Research Department and a group of seven
other Young NCB members, Emrys Green (18), Naushin Shariff (18),
Catherine Clark (17) and Amrita Ghosh (15) carried out a research
project exploring how young people are portrayed in the media and
how this makes young people feel.
They talked to groups of young people, interviewed journalists,
collected media stories, and ran an online survey. Their research
was funded by the National Youth Agency and is part of the Young
Researcher Network (YRN), which values, supports and encourages
research led by young people. To find out more about the research
and its findings please download the full report and the other
documents below.
