Circles of Influence - Talent & Leadership

Over the past eight months, UKYP has been working with the Talent & Enterprise Task Force, and a range of other partners, to sculpt a new approach about how we can extend our reach to many more young people.

At the heart of this work is the belief that every young person has a talent, but needs help to unlock it.  As new powers emerge in the global economy, and many more traditional industries move offshore, nurturing the individual talents of every young person has never been more crucial.

On Wednesday 19 November 2008, the UK Youth Parliament (UKYP) will hold its fourth annual campaign event, an intergenerational event, which this year will focus on “Talent and Leadership”.

The programme will be split in half, with the morning session enabling young people to explore in more detail the aims of UKYP’s three national campaigns and how to support them:

  • Fares Fair – a national concessionary fare scheme for all young people between the ages of 11 – 18 and in full-time education.
  • “Free-cycle” – a campaign for free recycling in all schools.
  • “Free for All” – to abolish University Tuition Fees

As well as taking part in a workshop, that will focus on young people’s talent and leadership skills:

  • The Skills for Success – What do young people need to be a leader?
  • The Local Agenda – What works well and not so well to support leadership in local areas?
  • The Citizenship Question – Do young people consider themselves to be citizens?

At lunchtime older people will be invited to join the event, and a debate will be held in the British Museum’s BP Lecture Theatre during the afternoon entitled, “Older People Make Natural Leaders Because They Have Greater Life Experience?”

UKYP would like to take this opportunity to invite young people from Young NCB to attend this event.  The event itself is free and lunch/refreshments provided, but you will need to make and pay for your own travel arrangements, and you will need to be accompanied by an appropriate adult.  Places are also limited, so we recommend booking early to avoid disappointment.
